The dominant Protestant military state that rose to become the engine of German unification. Under Frederick the Great a European great power; under Bismarck it defeated Austria (1866) and France (1871) to forge the German Empire. Prussia's authoritarian culture left a deep structural imprint on the fragility of the Weimar Republic that followed.
